perfect forest through so many splintere

"Hallelujah" is one of my favorite songs ever. It always makes me want to cry. I have covers of it by Rufus Wainwright, Regina Spektor, John Cale, U2, Jeff Buckley, and Brandi Carlile. And the original, of course. The above video is k.d. lang singing it, and it might possibly be my favorite one so far. If anyone can find an mp3 of the above video, that would rock my socks off. Possibly into next Tuesday.

Do you have a favorite cover of "Hallelujah?" Who's the artist?

I have to leave for work in ten minutes and that makes me sad. I'll be home after midnight. And I WILL ABSOLUTELY DEFINITELY post my Canada travelogue, which I have written out on paper but not typed up.

I've actually had this same debate and came to the same conclusion (or at least I presume the same conclusion - I can't listen at work).

On the topic: I don't remember being as thrilled by the Jeff Buckley version as everyone else and like a lot of Leonard Cohen's songs, the original leaves me a little cold.

I like the original, really. U2 is a close second, though k.d. is always fabulous and win.

I wanted to like the k.d.lang version, but the part that goes 'the minor fall, the major lift' she did wrong - you're suppose to go lower on 'major fall' and higher for 'major lift'. It's part of the.. thing, get it? Other than that, I like her version.

I'm fond of Rufus' version, but I haven't heard one by some of the other people you mentioned!

oh! marnanel of the joule page to see who's friended and defriended you? I had wondered what marnanel meant and hadn't even considered it might be somoene's username. Neat. Added you to my reading list.

she sings it more or less as cohen does, except unlike him she stays on the higher note when singing "the major lift." anyway it's a cover. she's not "supposed" to do anything.

although i love k.d. lang's voice, dimethirwen, she doesn't realize anything new here. covers should be re-imaginings of great songs, in my opinion, and there's nothing imaginative about this cover.

i have never heard a cover of the song i liked. i don't always prefer originals. here i do.

OHMYGOD.

Thank you. I now have 42 versions of Hallelujah on my computer.

I think Rufus is my favorite, but this version is beautiful. I also really like Leonard Cohen's version just because I like hearing it in the writer's voice.

Rufus Wainwright and Regina Spektor are my favorites. Rufus seems to bring out the melancholy imagery, while Regina sings like she's about to break in a large and hollow and empty room.

I enjoy the Rufus and kd versions, but my favorite is Kevin Max's version.

That's an almost crazy coincidence--in my mind at least. I just commented on how my university's production of Rabbit Hole last semester used Buckley's version of "Hallelujah" as pre-show music and we also used Imogen Heap's "Speeding Cars."

Buckley all the way, baby.

Buckley is clearly the winner in my heart ... but I saw Wainwright do this live with just a piano; it was outside in an ampitheater, where his voice echoed off walls and filled the space between, on a summer night where the heat was wet and cool at the same time, with rain and light thunder in the background, and you feel a thousand people hold their breath at once --- incredible

I also love this song but didn't even know Regina Spektor did a cover of it! The only version I've heard (until now) is the one by Rufus Wainwright.

The Rufus version is my favourite, but I remember the Dresden Dolls doing a very lovely cover of it a while back.

oh ok - yeah i agree his version of "hallelujah" isn't the best version that exists... but he does have some of the most chilling moments of word-meets-music that i've ever heard - first two that come to mind are "one of us cannot be wrong" and "the future" - mmmmm

I don't think I've heard enough of the covers to really justify picking a favorite, but yes, this song is absolutely incredible. We actually used it as part of our pre-show music last semester when the theatre put on a production of Rabbit Hole.
