bee girl
Yesterday, I went to AAA and got maps.

(I love being a AAA member. They jump started my car for free at one in the morning when her battery died; they've always proven helpful and friendly, and they GIVE ME MAPS!)

I went into the office around one. When the woman asked me how she could help me, I threw up my hands and said "I'm moving cross country, and I need direction."

She smiled and pulled out a gigantic US map. She then grabbed a small stamp shaped like a circle.

"Where are you starting from?" she asked.

"Allentown, PA," I said.

She stamped a little black circle around Allentown. "And where are you going?"

"San Francisco," I responded, and got that funny tingly feeling in my nose like I do before I cry.

She stamped San Francisco.

We spent the next two and a half hours working out the route between the two (all with her commenting "My goodness, I want to go on this trip with you!"). We decided that instead of leaving from Allentown I should leave from DC (my mom concurred - it'd be a waste of gas and time and I'd be moving farther away from the West Coast). The tentative route that we have worked out is this:

Day 1: Washington, DC to Bloomington, IN. Stay over with [info]natbrat and [info]been_a_book (btw, I will be emailing you shortly about that, [info]natbrat). Roughly 660 miles.

Day 2: Bloomington, IN to Minneapolis, MN, via Evansville, WI. The stop is to visit my 90-year-old grandmother who I haven't seen in years. I have an aunt I can stay with in Minneapolis. Roughly 650 miles.

Day 3: Minneapolis, MN to Rapid City, SD. I don't know who I'm going to stay with in SD, so if anyone knows anybody around Rapid City who'd be willing to put us up for a night, that'd be swell. I want to see Mount Rushmore while I'm there - probably the next morning before we leave to hit the road again. Roughly 603 miles.

Day 4: Rapid City, SD to Georgetown, CO by way of Rocky Mountain National Park, CO. We're not going to stay in the park, we'll go through the park and then stay further south, in Georgetown. Roughly 460 miles, plus the park. Plus we get to go through MOUNTAIN PASSES. HOW COOL IS THAT?

Day 5: Georgetown, CO to Farmington, NM. I have a friend who lives in Farmington who can put us up for the night. Roughly 372 miles.

Day 6: Farmington, NM to Las Vegas, Nevada by way of Grand Canyon Village. I GET TO SEE THE GRAND CANYON OMG. I also kind of want to see The Boneyard in Vegas, if I can. I don't know where I'll be staying in Vegas, so if you know anyone, let me know. Roughly 560 miles.

Day 7: Las Vegas, Nevada to SAN FRANCISCO! AHHHHHHHH. Roughly 550 miles.

I now have a huge map on my wall with circles around all of these places, and postit notes with addresses.

So, if you know anyone in or around the following places that will let me and one other person crash overnight, let me know:

Rapid City, SD.
Georgetown, CO (or Rocky Mountain National Park, CO)
Las Vegas

Also, I now have a traveling buddy! My friend Errol will be flying up from Guyana, crossing the country with me, staying in San Francisco for a few days, and then flying home.

Also! I will probably be getting camping gear, like a sleeping bag and tent. Does anyone have any good/light recommendations?

REI's 2-person half-dome tent is basic, good quality, and cheap. (You know, I could probably lend you a sleeping bag if you need it -- I'll be in DC in April and I live in the Bay Area. Maximum ease of handoff.)

That would be super-sweet, actually. When are you going to be in DC?

around the middle of the month *waves vaguely*. dates aren't set, but it'll be about a 2-week stretch. settlement of my house is 4/15 and my time in the DC area will probably bracket that date.

i'd lend you my tent, too, but i'm not entirely certain i can stuff it AND my sleeping bag AND clothes for 2 weeks in my luggage without the airlines charging me an arm and a leg for excess baggage. plus it's this ridiculous teepee thing. but if i can pull it off, i'll let you know.

I would like to help make a page on your website about your journey where you have one of those Google Maps maps, and you click the waymarkers, and you get photos and a link to your blog post about that day.

this page does not absolutely have to be called "where in the world is carmen machado", honestly.

Make sure you discuss cricket with him. The West Indies are in the process of getting their ass beat by Sri Lanka, although a strong second innings and they'll be able to salvage a draw.

I know you're excited to get to San Francisco, but ...
This is a once-in-a-lifetime road trip. I wishwishwish you would do it a little slower. Take a few back roads. Go 300 miles in a day, not 600. Spend a night at the Grand Canyon and wake up early to see the sunrise. Go for hikes in pretty places. Talk to strangers. I know $ is a problem, but can't you camp cheaply? (I want to live this trip vicariously, with lots of blog postings.)

I agree...600 mile days is quite a rapid pace!....that's about 12 hours per day on the highway with stops for food and gas, not even counting stops to SEE things.

Besides camping, there's always the option for hostels. e.g.:

Cosigned. 600 miles a day is like the "grueling" pace in Oregon Trail :) I suppose it'll be easier since you've got someone with you, but you definitely want to get more out of this than sitting in a car 12 hours a day.

Fine, avoid Utah, see if I care. ;)

You'll be going through territory I absolutely love toward the end there. Enjoy it for all it's worth!

a couple of great stops on the western trail:

1) Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colo. – Steven King's inspiration for The Shining, and a cool old hotel. Estes Park is a pleasant place, although the last time i was there it was completely overrun by elk. i guess that's a good thing.

2) Mesa Verde. if you're doing the SW Colorado route that drops down in to NW New Mexico to get to Farmington, the old cliff dwellings there are a must. spectacular place.

welcome to the west in advance! i agree with the others – go slow, enjoy the ride. the open spaces of the west can be quite soulful, if you let them be.

i love AAA as well. they helped me plan when i was moving 6 hours away ( seems like nothing compared to how far you're moving...) and i have TONS of maps, now.

i agree with everyone else, 600 miles a day is a bit much. you will go insane in the car for 12 hours straight, believe me. play it by ear.

i've always wanted to go cross country. i hope everything works out well for you. san francisco is a very awesome city to live in

I wish I could leave the country. Being without a job at the moment, this would be perfect timing for a road trip.

That's a lot of driving each day, like 12 hours per day - you will need a partner for sure!

I forgot to mention when you spoke to me earlier that I have a friend in Las Vegas who would probably be willing to put you up. She's an old friend of my mother's. I'll ask if you like. (Oh and she has a pool).

Fantastic!

Mountain passes are cool, but mountain driving can be tough, so be prepared for that.

REI sells great camping gear, and sometimes (4 times a year?) has a sale of very cheap damaged but usable returns. Craigslist might also hook you up with similar used cheap good camping gear.

i grew up about fifteen minutes away from RMNP, it's BEAUTIFUL. be careful on the passes though, mountain roads can be tricky. i think the eisenhower tunnel is on I-70, though, that thing is crazy.

if you pass fort collins, co be sure to wave at my ex-life.
