On the road again

Michael and Natalie's bed and hospitality were fantastically awesome. We're on our way in about twenty minutes. The morning looks overcast - hopefully it'll clear up.

Today: see my grandmother in Evansville, WI; see the House on the Rock in Dodgeville, WI, and stay with/see my Uncle Nick and Aunt Terri in Madison, WI. It's a day of my childhood - I haven't been back to Wisconsin since before I went to college.

Holy crap, you're right out by where I live.

The House on the Rock is a tribute to the bachelor pad and the shopping fugue, all in one. Have you read "American Gods"? There's a scene or two set there. The greatest grilled cheese sandwich of all time waits just outside Dodgeville, by the way. Turn onto country road Z on the way to or from The House on the Rock. Drive out into the country for something like 10 minutes, and you'll come to the corner of ZZ and Z, and there's what looks like a little farmhouse, which has a parking lot of dirt around it. That's the Pleasant Ridge Store, and the grilled cheese is the best anywhere. My friends from NYC and LA insist on going there when they visit.

Enjoy your day, it looks pretty out!

Most of my mother's family is from and/or lives in the Highland, Dodgeville, Mineral Point, and Madison area.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE House on the Rock. I've gone there half a dozen times since I was a kid and I think it's just great. I did read those passages in American Gods, and they made me happy because I was all "I KNOW THAT PLACE!"

In any case, we actually didn't go to HOTR today - we rearranged the schedule so that we'll be there tomorrow instead. Mayhaps we will check out the grilled cheese place. :)

Oh wow! I'm in Point.

"American Gods" confirmed for me that I wasn't going crazy -- the first time I went to the HotR, I could have sworn the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse were in the Organ Room, but they were out by the doll carousel. So when I read AG, it confirmed that they had, in fact, been in the Organ Room at one time. I love the organ room, because it has the whiff of Dr. Evermor to it. All the things I love most in the House were made by him, I think. Have you been up to Delaney's Salvage to see the Forevertron? Man, I love that place.

And: have you noticed the bathing clowns figurines in the House? They're with all the circus stuff. I never noticed them the first time, but I was fascinated yet horrified with them when I discovered them the second time through.

I've never seen them, but now I'll have to look. :)

I know this is totally last minute, but would you want to meet up with us tomorrow? We'll be there when it opens at nine.

Oh, I wish I could. It would be so much fun to catch up with you on your cross-country trip.

I work in Monroe, so I'll be at work by 8:00ish. I worked at home yesterday, so I can't call a sudden vac day, unfortunately. I might be able to get away with leaving slightly early on the other end -- by four if there's nothing on my calendar I'm forgetting. If anything along those lines might work out email me at nwhepcat at yahoo, but if not, have a great time and I wish I were there. And: clowns! Bathing!

We'll be heading out toward Minnesota by two or three at the latest. :( But I'll think of you while we're there! :)

Just wait until you get in to Rockies territory. Oh, man, are you in for a treat!!

(The West is totally where it's at. I never bragged to you about how much better our side of the country is, 'cuz that would have been rude, but now that you're transplanting, oh boy! Lucky you! You're on the *good* side now!)

(As a former resident of Idaho, I totally agree.)
