Brave Carmen Ventures into San Francisco

I know it sounds like a really cheesy children's book, but I was slightly anxious about public transportation and going into the city. But yesterday I decided that it was ridiculous that I was RIGHT HERE (albeit in Oakland, but really, RIGHT HERE) and was too chicken to just, you know, venture.

So I did.

Errol and I caught a bus to the BART, which reminded me of the Metro except it has way better seats. We then... er... BARTed? into the city. We got off at Powell and decided to just start walking.

We walked for a bit and ended up in what I'm assuming is the Financial District, because there were lots of international banks everywhere, and lots of very tall, funky buildings. It felt very generically "city," though, and not very "San Francisco."

We stopped at a corner, and I noticed a sign on a building. As I read it, I realized that we'd unintentionally stumbled upon American Zoetrope. So cool!

We kept walking. We stumbled onto the coolest bookstore ever - City Lights Books. We spent a while in there; I bought a book of Billy Collins' poetry, and Errol got some books, too. I have a feeling I'm going to be in there a lot.

We passed by tons of restaurants and bars and comedy clubs. My personal favorite discovery was a restaurant called "The Stinking Rose." Motto: We season our garlic with food! Woo-hoo! *does a dance*

As we walked, I began to recognize the city as San Francisco. The hills and the apartments and the trolley wire crisscrossed over the streets was all familiar. The trolleys (at least, I *think* these are trolleys) were the coolest - people just jumped and hung on while the trolley rumbled down the street. It was awesome!

We passed by something called "The Cannery," though I'm not sure what it is. It looked interesting, though.

We walked all the way to the water - to Hyde St. Pier. We saw the Golden Gate bridge from a distance. We then went and I had my first In-n-Out meal since coming to California. It was awesome and delicious.

So, all and all, it was an adventure filled day. Yay for finally getting out into the city!

Oh, and we almost got lost on the way back and ended up in some random place in the East Bay on the BART, but Errol figured it out and saved us both. Hurray!

Now time to shower and start the day. I slept for twelve hours last night. I think I'm still recovering from the road trip.

I am so envious of you getting to explore like that! It looks like a beautiful part of the world, full of the kind of places that are good to explore and spend time. And yay bookshops! And I want to eat at the garlic place one day, even if nobody will want to go near me for weeks! :)

Yay for you!

Hubby and I have gone into the city a few times but always with "a desitination" and usually tickets or a schedule to follow.

=:-) If you weren't already a hero of mine, you would be now!

I will have to come visit you sometime. What library do you work at, again?

I'm at the Oakland Public Library - my office is at the Main Library (on 14th St near Lake Merritt - the BART stop & the actual lake) - but I get out to all the branches at different times.

=:-)

city lights is a pretty awesome bookstore. north beach is one of my favorite neighborhoods in SF. if you're ever on the haight, stop at the bound together anarchists collective (1369 Haight St)... i could spend HOURS in there.

have fun exploring! i dont know how familiar you are with the city, but i recommend riding the MUNI around town, just to get a feel for the city and its streets.

Soon I will do a MUNI ride.

Actually, I'm slightly confused by the sheer variety of public transportation available. There's the BART, which is the rail, and the MUNI, which is... the bus system? And then there's... trolleys, and cable cars - or are those the same? Is there one "card" or something available for all of them? So many choices!

MUNI is the bus system. i like it because it goes practically everywhere in the city, and there are bus stops all over town at all times of day. i think MUNI is the best for getting around SF. BART is best for going in between cities (oakland, lake merritt, fremont, berkeley) and i'll use it sometimes if i know i want to go a far distance within SF pretty quickly (its more expensive than the bus, but faster, i think.) the trolleys/ cable cars (basically the same thing) are mainly just cool looking and for tourists/ for fun. they are more expensive, don't go as many places, and are more uncomfortable to ride. some of the MUNI 'buses' are actually old streetcars (namely the F line).. but they're still considered part of the MUNI system.

if you're going to be riding the BART a lot, there is a fast track card you can buy for it. i'm sure there is some sort of card you can buy for the MUNI, as well, but a tip is to make sure you ask for a transfer when you board the bus, and make good use of said transfer (theyre good for 90 minutes, i think, and you can use your transfer to get onto any bus line within that amount of time).

http://www.sfmta.com might help you out a little.

I'm just off Piedmont Avenue. I'm there until June 18th, and then I need to find something temporary until September (when my two friends are joining me and the three of us will be living together in the city).

I swear to god, I thought when I was a kid that eventually the Carmen Sandiego thing would die, but it appears that it will follow me forever.

I went to City Lights when I was in San Francisco four years ago. I bought a book of poetry by Ferlinghetti that I treasure. It was the coolest bookstore I'd been in outside of my home area in some time.

Enjoy the city and ride the firetruck over the Golden Gate Bridge. That's fun!

Wow, great pictures and post! I love the looks of that bookstore, and the motto of seasoning garlic with food. Whoever came up with that is a kindred spirit :D

God, I love San Francisco ... I wish I could plan another trip there right now, but I don't know as this'll be the year what with sinking all my spare change into producing a play.
